Celebrate International Day of Sport for Development and Peace with us

The 6th of April represents the day for us all to commemorate the power of sport as a tool for social change since the UN General Assembly declared it the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP), back in 2013.

From the 6th of April 2014 onwards, the power of sport has been celebrated worldwide for its ability to strengthen social ties, promote sustainable development and peace, as well as solidarity, and respect.

“Sport is also an important enabler of sustainable development. We recognise the growing contribution of sport to the realisation of development and peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect and the contributions it makes to the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals and communities as well as to health, education and social inclusion objectives.” (Quoting the 2030 UN Agenda for Sustainable Development).

Unfortunately, this year the celebration of the IDSDP is overshadowed by a crisis that is destabilising communities all over the world. In response to the global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 International Day of Sport for Development and Peace will focus on the health benefits of including physical activity in our daily routine, especially in this time of uncertainty and social distancing.

This year the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace will encourage people to be active whilst staying at home and will also promote solidarity, community, and team spirit, in order to raise awareness about COVID-19.

Promote physical activity and be a Supporter of Each Other

At EFDN, we have always promoted sport as a tool of social development, but now more than ever, with COVID-19 spreading globally, we are highlighting the importance of adding physical activity in our daily routine.

With the campaign Supporter of Each Other, EFDN aims to inspire people, clubs, leagues, FAs and all interested organisations to look out for and support each other. Through the campaign channels, we are communicating tips on how to stay healthy and physically active while staying at home and informing society about the activities and initiatives taken by people, players, clubs, leagues and FAs from all around Europe.

Show that you are a ‘Supporter of Each Other’ by sharing how you are supporting your community or how you are implementing physical activity in your daily routine on your social media channels, using the hashtags #SupporterofEachOther / #IDSDP. Be sure to tag Supporter of Each Other, EFDN and your team so, we can all promote physical activity together, during this crisis.

We will share your content on EFDN/ Supporter of Each Other media accounts:

  • Twitter: @EFDN_tweets / @supporterofeach
  • Instagram: @efdnfoundation / @supporterofeachother
  • Facebook: European Football for Development Network / Supporter of Each Other

More than 70 clubs, leagues, FAs and organisations have already become Supporters. To learn more about how to become a Supporter of Each Other, you can visit this page.
