Burnley FC fan Scott Cunliffe honoured by UEFA
Burnley FC fan Scott Cunliffe will receive the #EqualGame Award from UEFA. He was chosen together with Borussia Dortmund. According to UEFA, both are role models highlighting diversity, inclusion and accessibility in football.
Scott Cunliffe ran to all Burnley FC 2018/19 Premier League away fixtures, setting off from Turf Moor, Burnley FC’s home ground, each time. He raised more than €60,000 for our member Burnley FC in the Community and other English Premier League club’s charities. He covered nearly 5,000 kilometres and almost six million steps. He wanted to set himself a big challenge combining his love of away days with his passion for running and for his hometown of Burnley. Scott spent two decades working for charities in parts of Southeast Asia that were seriously affected by violent crime and poverty. His experiences left him with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. Running was a major part of his therapy in overcoming this.
“I am honoured that UEFA has chosen me as a recipient of the #EqualGame Award,” Scott said. “I believe that sport is a great leveller. Everyone should be able to enjoy the sport they love, either as a fan or as a player. I hope my running inspires others to move their legs, hearts and minds, no matter who they are.”
Delivering change in communities
All of the funds raised by Scott went to Burnley FC in the Community. They distributed the funds to local charities and each of the Premier League clubs Scott ran to. Burnley FC in the Community is the award-winning, official charity of Burnley Football Club. Burnley FC in the Community is a self-financing registered charity (No: 1155856) with a mission to support communities, inspire communities and deliver change in communities. The work of the charity is channeled into five key areas: sport, education, health, social inclusion and community facilities.
