Big Hearts: ”A Warm Welcome Awaits You at Tynecastle Park”
Big Hearts, the charitable arm of Heart of Midlothian Football Club, has initiated a ‘Warm Welcome’ program aimed at providing a weekly complimentary lunch for vulnerable individuals and families in the community.
This compassionate project, launched in December 2022, is in partnership with Cyrenians and was conceived in response to the pressing cost-of-living crisis. It forms a part of a broader winter support initiative designed to assist the local community during these challenging times.
The ‘Warm Welcome’ program offers participants a comforting experience at Tynecastle Park, where they are warmly greeted by a dedicated team of volunteers. Beyond the nourishing meals, the gatherings provide an opportunity for friendly conversations and companionship. In fact, some participants have even organized a dominoes competition, reflecting the inclusive and welcoming atmosphere.
Importantly, the ‘Warm Welcome’ lunches are accessible to anyone residing, working, or learning in the area, and the program is set to continue year-round due to a growing demand. Generous support from Edinburgh Council’s Southwest Community Grant, the National Lottery Awards, and Wood Mackenzie has enabled the group to sustain its mission of assisting vulnerable and socially isolated individuals within the local communities.
“Personally, I have really enjoyed meeting all the participants and seeing how the Club is reaching people who are very isolated.”
Dave Boyd, the Service Coordinator at Cyrenians
Additionally, volunteers play a vital role in this heartwarming project. John, a volunteer from Teens Plus, not only contributes to the program but also experiences significant personal benefits.
“John absolutely loves coming to volunteer at Big Hearts. It is giving him a confidence boost and he really looks forward to coming each week. It makes him feel like an important part of the community, gives him a purpose and makes him feel like he’s doing something worthwhile. Plus, he’s a massive Hearts fan!”

The ‘Warm Welcome’ lunch group gathers every Wednesday in the 1874 Fans Bar at Tynecastle Park, drawing in 30-40 participants from diverse age groups and backgrounds each week. This heartwarming initiative underscores the football club’s commitment to its community, demonstrating that the spirit of kindness and inclusion extends beyond the pitch.
