‘Beratungscafé unplugged’ raises awareness for Mental Diseases with Mainz’ 05Classrooms
With the introductory question “How many students of the class have a protective cover for their mobile phone and what protective cover do we actually have for our psyche?” did the speaker Christopher Haas from the consulting café Beratungscafé unplugged opened the Mainz’ 05Classrom workshop on “Mental Health”.
The consulting café called Beratungscafé unplugged, which is primarily concerned with consulting young people and young adults in various life issues and their mental health, was part of a four-hour workshop that took place in the OPEL ARENA.
Also the social worker of the Untermosel highschool is aware of the importance of this topic. For the ninth grade students, it was an exciting excursion to the OPEL ARENA, which included the workshop with the team from the consulting café.
Before the workshop, only a couple of students felt sufficiently informed about the topic, although according to the World Health Organisation WHO, “every third person suffers from a mental illness“, Henkel said.
By choosing famous people as examples, such as Lady Gaga, Robert Enke or Miley Cyrus, the class clarified how different mental illnesses can occur and that everyone can be affected.
How to get help & how to help people who are affected
In addition, the students were informed about how they could receive assistance in case of emergency and how to help people who suffer a mental illness.
Individual scenarios were discussed and further dealt with in group work. “It is our goal to make it more normal for people to talk about these diseases and to share ideas with others,” said the social psychologist.
Openly and honestly, an expert also talked about her depression, her difficult youth and all her experiences with it. The students agreed that the “sharing of the experience was very moving and made them think.” The aim of this 05er classroom action was thus more than effective.
The Mainz’ 05 Classroom expresses their thanks to the consultation group, Beratungscafé unplugged, which made this workshop possible.
