Benfica Foundation initiative supports homeless people

The cold wave that has been hit Portugal in the last few days and the recently decreed confinement measures have a huge impact on the homeless, one of the most vulnerable groups at this time. Benfica Foundation has provided emergency assistance to 450 homeless people in the city of Lisbon, signaled and accompanied by the Life and Peace Community.

This humanitarian aid consisted of 450 kits composed of a sleeping bag, gloves and a reusable mask. This amount made it possible to cover the four street teams of Comunidade Vida e Paz, which support the homeless population of the city of Lisbon in a continuous work of enormous merit and solidarity based on the help of hundreds of volunteers.
The Foundation’s kits were not only distributed in the four rounds of the street teams of Comunidade Vida e Paz, including points of greater concentration in Lisbon such as Oriente, Saldanha, Rossio or Santa Apolónia, but also at more isolated places in the city that some homeless people choose.

At a time when more restrictive measures associated with the COVID-19 pandemic have been adopted and Porgugal is going through the phase of higher pressure on the National Health Service, it is critical to support those in the most fragile situations. The video of a news report about the initiative can be watched here.
