83 teams contribute to social inclusion at Werder Cup

The annual Werder Cup took place last weekend. Already for the 17th time boys and girls with and without disabilities played for the cup on the training grounds of SV Werder Bremen.

In addition to the trophy for the champion, there were other prizes for the kids. The school classes and clubs could win, for example, tickets for a home match of SV Werder Bremen. The best players and goalkeepers also received an invitation to talent training at the Werder Performance Centre.

83 teams at the 2019 edition

With a total of 83 teams at the 2019 edition, the Werder Cup has never been bigger. On Friday, the tournament has already started with 36 school teams. For the first time, boys and girls from primary and secondary schools all over Bremen and the region Lower Saxony played together with inclusive school teams. Values such as tolerance, Fair Play and respect were as important as winning matches. After some exhausting games, Werder professional Niclas Füllkrug handed over the trophy to the champions.

On the second day of the Werder Cup there were two different tournaments. In the cup of the clubs, boys and girls played together like already on Friday. There was also a Handicap Cup, where children with disabilities could compete against each other on different levels. Besides the Werder Youngstars, there were also two inclusive teams from Basel and Groningen. But not only the players were excited: “We come from a rural area and it’s great that we are allowed to take part in such a cup. We are proud. The last two weeks have been pure excitement for us only because we knew that it will take place,” said a mother of one of the players.
