N.E.C Nijmegen organises the 4th edition of its Special Day
On Thursday, June 1st, 2017, NEC Nijmegen organises together with Special Heroes, Uniek Sporten, the Municipality of Nijmegen and HAN Sport & Physical Education , the 4th edition of the Special Day. At the Special Day, children with a disability are being introduced to different sporting possibilities around Nijmegen and their interest for participating in activities is being sparked.
Local sports coach Erik Groenen explains, “the children have among others hearing impairment, are chronically ill, have autism, behavioural problems or physical disabilities. Many of the children are familiar with taking part in certain physical activities, due to physical education in school or local sport clubs. The Special Day is seen as another opportunity to get the children interested in sports and in joining a sports club.”
Schools and clubs involved in the Special Day
Different sport associations are participating in the Special Day. From 10- 14:30, the sport organisations offer diverse trial courses. The short lessons demonstrate the children that there are plenty of opportunities to participate in sports with a disability, thereby there interest shall be awaken.
From around Nijmegen, different schools will join the day. Overall, around 300 children will participate.
The programme
The day will start with Jochem van Gelder, a famous Dutch radio host. Afterwards, the children will participate in a choreography, which functions as the warm-up of the Special Day. It follows the participation in sessions of basketball, running courses, football games and matches.
Throughout the day, the children and their tutors receive information how and where it is possible to subscribe at a sports club.
The organisation of the Special Day
This year, for the first time, five organisations are involved in the organisation of the Special Day: Uniek Sporten, the NEC Foundation NEC Doelbewust, Special Heroes, the city of Nijmegen and HAN Sports & Physical Education.
In order to increase the sport participation of people with disabilities throughout the season, all organisations cooperate closely with each other. Also, they support associations in various issues, such as recruiting members or giving training volunteers. For example, students from HAN Sports & Physical Education are being recruited to take part in the organisation and on the day itself to assist the participants and help them if they need to.
