7th Edition of the International Football Works Tournament Coming Up!

Together, with the Penitentiary Institution (PI) Veenhuizen and ‘Work Through Sport’ of Ex-Made DJI, we are organising the 7th edition of the international football tournament ‘Football Works!’ on Thursday 14 September 2023. A tournament for football clubs and prisons from all over Europe that are active in the employment guidance of ex-prisoners through sport.

Within this edition, 14 teams including, several prisons from the Netherlands are taking part. These prisons carried out an ‘Inside’ programme in the last six months. These are sports and employment training programmes with professional clubs within the prison walls, e.g. FC Emmen Inside (PI Veenhuizen), FC Utrecht Inside (PI Nieuwegein), ADO Den Haag Inside (PI Alphen), FC Dordrecht Inside (PI Dordrecht) and StreetKings Inside (PI Lelystad).

There will also be teams from abroad who are part of the European Erasmus+ Project ‘Football Works’ such as Bayer Leverkusen (Leverkusen, Germany), Valerenga Fotball (Oslo, Norway), Bohemian FC (Dublin, Ireland), Southampton FC (Southampton, England) and Serbian prison Sremska Mitrovica.  And of course the former pros with ‘a scratch’ from FC De Rebellen are not missing.

Apart from football, the programme includes:

  • A workshop by professor Haydn Morgan on the effects of sport during detention
  • ‘The ball was my salvation’, a lecture by Edward van Gils
  • A presentation by two colleagues from Feltham prison (London) on sports programmes involving football, rugby, rowing, running, and plans to get started with cricket and fishing
  • A special site event, namely fishing!
